Habit Breaking
Habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting can have an adverse effect on the normal growth of the jaws and teeth. Prolonged habits can create jaw/teeth discrepancies such as narrow upper arch, crossbites, open bites (upper and lower teeth unable to contact), flared teeth, and increased overjet. Drs. Hamanishi and Cho will review different options for habit breaking appliances. Call us (403) 452-4611 to schedule a complimentary appointment.
My child sucks her/his thumb. When should she/he stop?
It is important to stop the habit as soon as possible; however, before the permanent teeth erupt is a good rule to follow. This will ensure that less of the undesired side effects will occur. If your child continues to have a thumb sucking habit even after the permanent teeth erupt, it is important to see Drs. Hamanishi or Cho for a complimentary consultation. Habits are easier to treat earlier and prevent the negative side effects instead of waiting and trying to correct the side effects that have already occurred. If you notice your child has a habit, don’t delay and book a consultation.
How do I know if my child is tongue thrusting?
Often times, you may not be able to tell that a child is tongue thrusting from just observing from the outside. Many times, the habit can be subtle. The issue is that any prolonged force, no matter how subtle it is, can create negative side effects on the developing teeth and/or jaw. If you have concerns about tongue thrusting, it is recommended that you book a complimentary consultation.
