Functional Appliances

Orthodontists are specialists that are trained to correct jaw disharmonies in growing patients using dentofacial orthopedics. Functional appliances can be used to put the jaws in balance, achieve facial harmony, and achieve good facial muscle function. There are many different types of functional appliances. Some examples of functional appliances are the following: twin block, bionator, and activator. Call us (403) 730-6400 and schedule a complimentary consultation, to see which might be the right fit for you.

When are functional appliances used?

Functional appliances are recommended by Drs.Hamanishi and Cho to utilize the patient’s remaining growth to decrease/eliminate a skeletal discrepancy in the jaws. These appliances can correct and guide the growth of the jaws in a proper position. Since functional appliances work in GROWING patients, it is important to get an orthodontic consult prior to growth being finished. This is why it is recommended to get a consultation by the age of 7. Not all patients will require a functional appliance, but you do not want to miss the window of opportunity if a functional appliance will be beneficial to you.

Do functional appliances just move the teeth? Funtional Appliances

Functional appliances not only move teeth but also correct the alignment of the jaws when they are in disharmony (improper position) in a growing patient. A common objective of functional appliances is to correct an underdeveloped lower jaw. The below image depicts a common goal of a functional appliance:

How long do I need to wear the functional appliance for?

Each patient is different but on average, you can expect anywhere from 6-12months. The main goal of functional appliances is to get the jaws in proper position. After the jaws are in proper position, braces or Invisalign® will usually follow to detail the teeth and bite. The braces or Invisalign® can follow immediately after functional appliances or there can be a break until you are ready for braces or Invisalign®.

Here are some pointers to follow while wearing a functional appliance:

The more you wear your appliance, the faster the treatment outcome

If the appliance causes sore spots on your gums, try using warm salt water rinses a few times a day; if the sore spot does not go away, make an appointment to see Drs. Hamanishi or Cho so they can see if an adjustment needs to be made to your appliance

Use care when removing your appliance for eating and brushing; never wrap your appliance in a napkin or put it in your pocket

Keep your appliance in “your FACE or CASE” at all times

Keep your lips together as much as possible while wearing the appliance
